hi fellows,

i guess a l'le background will help first. I'm from New Delhi. did my grad in commerce. after this i enrolled myself into the chartered accountancy course.(it's the equivalent of CPA in North America and CIMA in Britain). However destiny willed otherwise and I had to drop out midway because of my poor academic record. [i must add at this point that i've always been enamoured by films and had wanted to get into this area sometime down the line] But now after a lot of introspection i've decided that why not infact start and end my career in this field only. why not really make a career out of something which I love and am crazy 'bout.The trouble is that having lost some precious year i really don't want to get into a film school and learn all these mundane things which i can easily get to know by the way of some hands on experience. The question is how do I start with things. I myself guess that editing will be the right thing to start with. (of course i ultimately want to move to film making)your valuable opinions are welcome. thanks.

you'd be surprised what you can learn from editing, I think that would be a good choice. No matter what discipline you end up following, what you learn during editing sessions will be applicable.

Beyond the obvious narrative skills, you can also learn about the sort of coverage you will need to get as a director/cameraman/soundman and augment the edit with good sound design. All this, without getting soaked in the rain!

Another great learning process is to write a script, but I think really great scripts are really difficult to write. And then the director re-interprets it all to the actors who perform their interpretation, etc.

Of course, then there are the organisational skills you will need to be a filmmaker, but you have a head start if you know anything about creative accounting ;-)

yeah, i totally agree with you miker. besides i really love what this Roberto Rodriguez guy says to be your own technical man.
as far as your thoughts about scriptwriting are concerned; well i've already started working on it. I've got two-three ideas with me(one of them being my dream project). But I want to keep working on it and refining it while I am learning other skills.
